Owning a pool is the most amazing thing, and it should be enjoyed without creating fear of unavoidable accidents that most home owners, neighbours and even security officers find themselves groping with. By engaging pool fencing technicians, parents can reduce the risk of their little children, pets, or any vulnerable person in their home compound from drowning or from accidentally falling inside the pools which can cause fatal injuries. There are specific requirements that home owners should adhere to when setting up any pool fencing method in their homes.
It is a general requirement by the Australian law that any pool filled with water to a depth of 300mm of water whether an inflatable and potable pool or the normal concrete pool must have a fence around it. An exception of backyard pools in large properties, small properties and waterfront properties installed before 1st July 2010 which have used part of the building walls as the pool’s safety barrier had been previously made. For this exception to hold, however, property owners must prove that they have complied at all times with the required specifications of ensuring safety around the pools in their properties.
Other Specific Requirements Include:
• At least a height of 1200mm fence all around if the pool was installed before 1st September 2008.
• At least a height of 1800mm fence all around if the pool was installed after 1st September 2008 and if part of the pool safety fence is also part of a boundary fence.
• Gaps between the vertical rails or other rails that are almost vertical that have constructed the gate to the pool or the fence must not be more than 100mm apart.
• The gap between the ground and the safety fence must not be more than 100mm.
• If the type of fencing used has holes like in perforated or mesh pool fencing materials, the holes must not be more than 13mm.
• The gate to the swimming pool must open outwards, and it must also be self-closing from any open position.
• There must be no footholds along the pool safety fence to prevent children from getting to the pool.
• Objects like flower pots, benches, or plants like trees must not be placed or planted within 900mm of the safety fence to prevent young children from getting access to the pool by climbing them.
• The pool fence must be maintained very well and repaired in good time if broken to ensure that it is in good state at all times.
• It is mandatory to display a resuscitation sign immediately near the pool.
To make sure that property owners comply with these and many other requirements, they should consult qualified pool fencing technicians to avoid heavy penalties due to non-compliance.
